The problem with the far right demanding “states rights” is because they’re looking for the most repressive states to create a national precedent to oppress the whole country. It’s been enacted since the end of the civil war. It’s about intention! They’re using a jargon that sounds like freedom, but delivers repression.

Of course we all want to live our lives, have freedom of expression, choice, etc- but it cannot- MUST NOT- be at the expense of hurting other people.

If LA decides they want to torture women who have miscarriages, should we just roll over and say, “state’s rights!”. I say, HELL NO. They would be imposing their morality over the will of freedom to live as you need to. This whole state’s rights issue is like living in upside down land. You cannot behave badly toward other humans without enduring consequences. And I don’t mean that as a threat, I mean: social isolation, boycotts, denunciation, protests, etc. Kids know immediately who to choose as friends: people who let you be you, don’t tolerate harmful behavior/words, and who support you even when you’re not perfect. Don’t let this argument be colored into some right-wing propoganda for pushing repressive control as some false golden calf of “saving you”. That’s bullshit.

"States Rights" my ass. Some states would bring back slavery and child labor if they could.

Great job breaking this down! I know you made a quick mention of child labor, and you are so very right. This was from just a few days ago: "Renewed statehouse efforts to loosen child labor restrictions are pairing up with the Trump administration’s federal staff cuts to cast new doubt on the future effectiveness of child labor law enforcement." It all goes hand and hand. Grr.
